The Impact of Bilingualism on Prospective memory

Our ability to form intentions and execute them in the future relies on the prospective memory. Besides, sufficient context monitoring and disengagement from the ongoing task are needed for successful retrieval of prospective intentions. These two factors are also important in bilinguals’ ability to predict incoming language information and guide language production. In 2021, López-Rojas and her colleagues investigated the impact of bilingualism on prospective memory tasks with different attentional requirements. According to the behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) results, it was revealed that early bilinguals’ performance in the prospective task was different from late bilinguals and monolinguals, suggesting that prospective processing is dependent upon the bilingual experience.
