Development of new software for online detection of neurons inside the cortex

Researchers at the neuroscience research center of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Health Services (SBMU) developed new software to diagnose neural disorders.

Researchers at the neuroscience research center of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Health Services (SBMU) developed new software to diagnose neural disorders. This software is considered as an alternative for foreign products.

Dr. Mir Shahram Safari, a faculty member at SBMU, says: the software that we developed is a mean to detect the type of neurons inside the brain of a living animal. The works that have been done so far can distinguish between stimulatory and inhibitory neurons and determine the subgroup that this neuron belongs to.

A big challenge over the years was to identify the type of neuron that is being recorded in electrophysiology, and this problem meant that we could not precisely determine the function of it, in the brain. This new method uses 8 of the more than 30 electrophysiological factors, and based on learning algorithms enables us to diagnose disorders with more than 90 percent accuracy.
