Objectives of the CourseTraining course on Magnetic and Electrical Brain Stimulation Protocols: Research and Clinical Applications:

  • Developing and promoting the knowledge and technologies of cognitive science and brain mapping
  • Establishing effective communication between the medical community and the engineering community and forming purposeful teams to further promote interdisciplinary sciences
  • Skill Training and empowerment of those interested in this field
  • Introduction to the latest research applications of brain stimulation methods
  • Identifying interested researchers and solving their research challenges and problems
  • Introduction to the moral do's and don'ts of using brain stimulation methods in treatment

1st Session: History of Brain Stimulation

  • Different Methods (ECT, tDCS, TMS, VNS, DBS)
  • Definitions, history, mechanism of action, applications
  • Comparing methods (advantages and disadvantages)

2nd Session:  Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Use of Navigation  System

  • TMS physics

  • Structural and functional connectivity of the brain
  • Introduction to different techniques of brain stimulation
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation parameters (frequency, intensity, stimulation period and stimulation location)
  • Mechanisms of functional recovery (multimodal studies)
  • TMS
  • TMS-MRI
  • TMS-EEG
  • TMS-fNIRS
  • Mode of setting up TMS machine parameters
  • The way of getting MEP and movement threshold
  • Introduction to Navigation System and its performance
  • Using the Navigation system and determining target points whether using MRI or not
  • Method of getting MEP and movement threshold as well as brain mapping recording
  • Method of displaying EEG record points using the Navigation system

  • Physiology and mechanism of action of tES
  • Introduction to Electrical stimulation parameters
  • Introduction to the neuroscience effects of tES in a healthy brain
  • Strengths and weaknesses of tES compared to other methods of brain stimulation
  • Do's and Don'ts and ethical considerations
  • Practical training on localization of brain different parts through 10-20 system and EEG cap
  • The way of setting up tES machine parameters, finding points and assembling the electrodes
  • Working with the Neuroconn system (single channel)
  • Working with EEG/tCS Starstim system
