Sleep deprivation has a destructive effect on cognitive activities and health

The faculty member of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences while sleep deprivation and sleep disorders are ones of the most prevalent problems in the world today said: recently studies show that sleeplessness even for one night can cause some psychotic symptoms.

Addressing molecular pathways involved in the destructive mental effects of sleep deprivation could potentially lead to novel methods to develop further effective drugs for psychotic diseases. Dr. Ali Ahmad Ali Poor said: this research proposal was approved at the Cognitive Science and Technologies Council titled: “the role of the endocannabinoid system in cognitive and psychotic disorders due to sleep deprivation in the rat.” Many researchers and experts at various medical majors from Iran as well as other countries contribute to this investigation.

He also added: at this research project, the role of the endocannabinoid system in the psychosis model due to insomnia was proposed for the first time. Also, investigation of the sleep deprivation effects on the sexual behaviors were examined; and two methods of sleep deprivation REM (active sleep and contradictory sleep) and complete sleep deprivation were used.

He said: sleep deprivation could have harmful effects such as the drugs on the body and in particular the brain.
